Struck thru
Struck thru - An error caused by a foreign object that got between the dies and the planchet when a coin was struck. A common Struck Thru error is a piece of wire that leaves an indentation that is usually mistaken for a scratch.
1921-S $1 Morgan Dollar--Struck Thru Grease--AU50 ANACS. Sold for $80.50. Grease clogged the lower right obverse die when this Silver Dollar was struck. Much of Liberty's back neck and trailing hair curls are obliterated (as made) from the gunk in the dies; only the 19 in the date is clear. An unusual mint error that has pearl-gray and olive patina. Two brief letters from noted VAM authority Leroy Van Allen, dated April 27, 2003 and 10 Sep 2003 (sic) accompany the lot and discuss the significance of this error.(#7300)
