1879 Morgan Dollar Pattern in Silver Judd-1611, PR68 Cameo Finest Known Sold for: $27,600.00

1879 $1 Morgan Dollar, Judd-1611, Pollock-1807, Low R.7, PR68 Cameo NGC. The obverse is that of the regular-issue Morgan dollar, while the reverse shows a statuesque eagle perched, head facing left, with downward-pointed wings, clutching an olive branch and three arrows. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR encircle the border. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
This "near-Morgan dollar" poses an interesting contrast with the adopted design. The obverse is as-issued. The eagle on this reverse shows considerable differences, the shape of the head and the center breast, in particular, approach the circulation design, but are still noticeably different. The result of Morgan's efforts was an eagle that was described as "scrawny." About a dozen pieces are extant of this variety, and it is known in both copper and silver.
This is the finest example known of this popular Morgan dollar pattern. A PR67 is recorded at both NGC and PCGS, these are the closest contenders and neither of these pieces are designated as a Cameo. The fields are deeply mirrored with noticeably contrasting mint frost over the devices. When examined with a strong loupe there are simply no contact marks or other imperfections apparent on either side. Even the striking details are complete. When closely examined one notices just the slightest accent of golden patina on each side, but the coin primarily presents as brilliant because of the exceptional depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. Morgan dollar collectors take an interest in such patterns as this as it allows the student of the series to trace the progression of various concepts through to the adopted design. (#61989)

Superb, Full Red 1879 Morgan Dollar Pattern, Judd-1612 Sold for: $23,000.00

1879 $1 Morgan Dollar, Judd-1612, Pollock-1808, R.6, PR67 Red NGC. Ex: Genaitis. A pattern Morgan dollar, showing the adopted obverse with a reverse that displays a broad and imposing "shield type" eagle with spread wings. According to the USPatterns.com website, "This design by Morgan is another attempt to replace the production design whose eagle was described as scrawny among other things." Struck in copper with a reeded edge. A pristine, full red pattern dollar and extremely rare as such. The surfaces show even, cherry-red color over both sides with occasional flashes of lime-green here and there. Deeply mirrored and obviously problem-free, a pattern of unsurpassable quality.

Splendid 1879 Judd-1613 Morgan Dollar, PR63 Sold for $7,475.00

1879 $1 Morgan Dollar, Judd-1613, Pollock-1809, Low R.7, PR63 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. George Morgan's Liberty Head obverse design is usually known simply as the Morgan design. The reverse has a tall, erect eagle with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and IN GOD WE TRUST above, and ONE DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Although a trifle weak at the centers, this is a lovely proof with deep steel-blue and iridescent toning. Population: 5 in 63, 4 finer (7/10).
