Belly button striking errors are caused by slightly weak strikes (die striking pressure) plus die basining with shallow radius of curvature that emphases coin metal flow towards periphery and less at coin enter. See 1885-O VAM-24. Belly button depression will vary from coin to coin because of slight differences in planchet hardness and tolerances.
